A Linguistic Approach to Structural Analysis in Prospective Studies

Maria T Lamata, Pablo Villacorta

One of the methodologies more used to accomplish prospec-tive analysis is the scenario method. The first stage of this method is the so called structural analysis and aims to determine the most important variables of a system. Despite being widely used, structural analysis still presents some shortcomings, mainly due to the vagueness of the informa-tion used in this process. In this sense, the application of Soft Computing to structural analysis can contribute to reduce the impact of these prob-lems by providing more interpretable and robust models. With this in mind, we present a methodology for structural analysis based on com-puting with words techniques to properly address vagueness and increase the interpretability. The method has been applied to a real problem with encouraging results.

Exploring Prospective Structural Analysis to Assess the Relevance of Rural Territorial Development in Spain and Nicaragua

Rural Territorial Development policy approach was launched in Europe to foster rural development under the LEADER initiative. It sparked off great interest in Latin America. We analyse the role played by RTD principles in the dynamics and evolution of four rural areas in Spain and Nicaragua. In doing so, we provide empirical understanding on the validity of the principles to boost rural change and contribute to evidencebased policy-making. Methodologically, we explore the use of participatory prospective tools that apprehend rural areas’ evolving and complex nature. The potential of Prospective Structural Analysis to describe rural dynamics, and to support social changes and decision-making is tested.

Risks Prioritization in Global Supply Networks Using MICMAC Method: A Real Case Study

Wafik Hachicha

Modern supply chains are very complex and suffer always from various risks. An effective supply chain management requires suitable strategies to mitigate them. In literature, there has been a range of research into risk in purchasing and supply, but little in global and integrated supply networks. This can be explained due to the huge number of risk variables and their direct and indirect interrelations that may suffer all supply chain partners. Therefore, for better risk management process, the risk prioritization step is vital. The purpose of this paper is to apply a structural modeling technique for risk analysis and prioritization through a real case study of Masmoudi pastry supply network. Firstly, thirty risk variables have been identified through literature survey, interaction with industry experts, and various interviews with the supply key managers. Secondly, MICMAC method is applied to recognize both direct and indirect relationships between these thirty risk variables, an...

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study is to identify the variables for the lack of transparency in humanitarian logistics (HL) and to determine their mutual relationship. The interpretive structure modeling (ISM) method was applied to extend a hierarchy-based model of the identified variables. The study makes two key contributions: the variables that can be reflected as inhibitors to transparency in HL are determined, and the ISM methodology is used to determine the group of variables that have full control, low reliance and strategic importance. The study findings are beneficial for all stakeholders of disaster risk reductions.

Labour is the prime contributor for the industrial growth and economic development of a country. It is known to be the segment which contributes significantly to the GDP of the Nation. Work is generally known to be the physical or mental engagement of the people in any economically productive activity for their livelihood. The Indian economy is characterized by the existence of a vast majority of employment in the unorganised sectors. Its dominance in the employment front is such that more than 90 per cent of the total workforce belongs to the informal economy. Planned Economic Development in the country can be achieved by eliminating poverty through employment and income generation. In this regard, Fisheries sector plays an important role in the developing countries of the world. The fisheries contribution to the Indian economy has enriched after the introduction of advanced technology to increase the yield per unit area of water attracting more foreign exchange. The problems of poverty and malnutrition faced in coastal areas can be simultaneously met through, planned utilization of available local resources and encouraging participation of the local people in the fishing occupation. Fisher folk are those people who engage in fishing activities. They are the victims of economic oppression and lives under social prejudices with low social status. There is a need to undertake systematic study on the life of the fishermen to seek solutions to their existing problems and to improve their overall status. This study will review into the work life of fisher folks in Thota Bengre village belonging to Mangaluru taluk in Karnataka State.

Validity of Primary School Examination as a Predictor of Secondary School Examination Score Among Public Secondary School Students Kenya

Eunice Atieno Agingu

The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of KCPE as a predictor of KCSE scores among public secondary school students in Kisii central Sub-county, Kenya. This study was guided by a conceptual framework where KCPE was the independent variable and KCSE the dependent variable. It adopted Correlational and Ex-post-facto research designs. The study population was 3,897 KCSE candidates from 55 public secondary schools. Stratified random sampling based on school type and size was used to select 16 public secondary schools for the study. Saturated sampling was employed to include all KCSE candidates whose KCPE marks were available in each sampled school, yielding a sample of 1,391 students. Data used included 2006 KCPE scores and 2010 KCSE scores of the same students under study. Data was collected using a researcher made pro forma. It was analyzed quantitatively using correlations and regression analyses. Results showed a strong positive Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r...
